Australia's fishing industry is ranked fourth most valuable food-based primary industry in 2003-04, producing about 270,000 tonnes of seafood, worth about $2.2 billion before (any) value-adding.

Commercial wild-catch fishing activity can take many forms and occur in almost 120 fisheries around Australia. Currently there are more than 15,000 licence holders. More information is available in our Industry Overview.
